that joins all the national teams in Europe in trying
to qualify for the final stages of the tournament,
which then crowns one nation as the European
Champion and wins the Henry Delaunay Cup. The
competition evolved slowly with the first five
editions (1960-1976) having only the last four
matches hosted in one country. This changed from
the sixth edition (1980) for a full tournament of 16
teams and again in the 2016 edition which saw an
increase in the participants of the final tournament
to 24 teams.
This is the second time Germany is hosting the
European Championship, thus reaching Italy and
Belgium in hosting the final tournament twice
(Belgium organised one edition with The
Netherlands). Germany previously hosted the 1988
edition as West Germany. They also hosted the
FIFA World Cup on two occasions: 1974 (as West
Germany) and 2006, and the FIFA Confederations
Cup on one occasion: 2005. Italy are the current
European Champions and won the competition
twice, in 1968 and 2020. They finished runner-up in
2000 and 2012 and also finished twice in the fourth
position: 1980 and 1988. Italy hosted the European
Nations Championship twice, in 1968 and 1980.
The first two editions (1960-1964) were called the
'European Cup', but since the third edition (1968)
the tournament started to be called the 'European
Nations Championships'. The final tournament is
normally held in one country, although three
editions of the European Nations Championship were co-hosted by two countries - Belgium and Netherlands in 2000, Austria and Switzerland in 2008, and Poland and Ukraine in 2012.
The last edition, 2020, celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the competition (1960 - 2020) by being hosted all around Europe instead of in one or two countries. In fact all matches were played in 11 different European cities / countries, with the Semi-Finals and Final being played in England and the Inauguration match played in Rome Italy. In view of the worldwide pandemic COVID-19 the competition was moved by a year, from 2020 to 2021.
The predecessor of this European competition was the 'Coppa Internazionale' that was played between the Central European Nations between 1927 and 1960. The competition was played on a home / away basis and reached six editions. Italy won two of them (the first edition - 1930 and third edition - 1935) and also finished second in another (second edition - 1932).

The mascot of this edition is the Teddy-Bear Albart. The mascot pays homage to the popular children's teddy bear toy, which is said to have originated in Germany in the early 20th century and the name Albart was selected from a shortlist of names, all puns on the German word 'Bear', which included Barnardo, Barnheart and Herzi von Bar. Albart received 32 % of the vote.
